A recent search of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) database indicted that of a sampling of 147 men who completed the Men's Anger Management Program at Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, 96% had no reported incidients of domestic violence 10-18 months after graduating from the program. ...more

New Mentoring Program at Phyllis Wheatley Provides Opportunity to Youth and Adults

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, a cornerstone of the Minneapolis community since 1924, is beginning a school/community center based, one-on-one mentoring program for children in our surrounding community.

Research has shown that pairing youth one-on-one with caring and responsible adult mentors greatly increases the child’s chance of developing the social and academic skills needed to succeed in school and in life.

Phyllis Wheatley Earns Charities Review Council's Meets All Standards Seal

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center has been awarded the Charities Review Council “Meets All Standards” Seal indicating that it meets all sixteen rigorous Accountability Standards.

            Nonprofit organizations such as Phyllis Wheatley Community Center earn the Seal by voluntarily participating in the Council’s online Accountability Wizard. The Accountability Wizard is available to all nonprofit organizations in Minnesota and addresses a nonprofit organization’s performance in four critical areas: Public Disclosure, Governance, Financial Activity and Fundraising. By participating in the Accountability Wizard, nonprofit organizations can demonstrate responsibility, integrity, and transparency to their constituents.

Phyllis Wheatley Works to Close Academic Achievement Gap

In the state of Minnesota, one in two children enters Kindergarten unprepared to succeed.  Among low-income families, a child is read to an average of 25 hours before entering Kindergarten, while a child from a middle-income family is read to an average of 1,700 hours.  Phyllis Wheatley Community Center is working to close this academic achievement gap and has teamed up with Volunteers of America, Jumpstart and a number of other entities and individuals concerned about the future of our youth.

Phyllis Wheatley Welcomes New Executive Director Barbara Milon

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center is pleased to announce that Barbara Milon has become its new Executive Director effective February 10.  This announcement comes after a six-month national executive search conducted by Phyllis Wheatley’s board of directors.  “We were intent on finding the right person to lead the agency during an exciting time in the history of our organization and North Minneapolis,” said Wheatley Board Chair Henry Wesley.  “Ms. Milon will bring energy and many strengths to the organization, including demonstrated success in community development, fundraising, nonprofit management and partnership collaboration.”

Over 100 people gathered to celebrate Phyllis Wheatley Community Center’s 78 years of community service at their anniversary fundraiser held on October 17 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Center at the University of Minnesota.  The event, themed “Remembering the Past…Shaping the Future. Choices. Challenges. Changes” paid tribute to the agency’s rich legacy and showed how its current programs in child and youth development and family support services are helping to shape the future. ...more

Phyllis Wheatley held a youth conference on Saturday, August 24.  The conference, "Empowering Youth for the Future Against All Odds," offered a series of workshops on topics such as leadership, healthy sexual relationships, community service, education and succeeding against all odds.  Music and dancing during lunch added to the fun.  There were also door prizes and grab bags filled with snacks and trinkets and testimonies from youth sharing what they had received from the day.  ...more

Over 100 family, friends and staff of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center's Mary T. Wellcome Child Development Center, located at 1220 Seventh Avenue North in Minneapolis, gathered at the site on June 7 to celebrate the accomplishments of children graduating from its preschool.  City Council Member Natalie Johnson Lee delivered the commencement address, encouraging the children to strive for greater things and instilling in them that they can be whatever they want to if they work hard.  ...more

 Donnie Belcher and Gregory Clark, two participants of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center's Let's Motivate Leadership Council, were among five Twin Cities students honored with Children's Defense Fund-Minnesota "Beat the Odds" awards.   Both are seniors attending North High.  They were chosen for this award based on their ability to succeed despite obstacles and challenges encountered in their life.  As part of this recognition, the students will receive scholarships to pursue higher education.

Phyllis Wheatley Helps to Spread Holiday Cheer

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center distributed donations of food, toys and funds on behalf of a number of people and organizations wishing to share holiday cheer with the community.  "This outpouring of support for families in the community was one of the most generous experienced by Phyllis Wheatley in recent years," said Wheatley Associate Director Margaret Moore, who helped to coordinate many of the donations. 
"We are thrilled with the generosity demonstrated by so many individuals and groups," added Carl B. Jones, President & CEO of Phyllis Wheatley.  "The spirit of the season was certainly strong at Phyllis Wheatley."

Phyllis Wheatley Celebrates 77 Years With Fundraiser-Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III Headlines Event

Drawing on the patriotism and work of poet and former slave Phyllis Wheatley, the Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III delivered a powerful message at Phyllis Wheatley Community Center’s 77th Anniversary “Empowering Families Through Generations” fundraiser banquet on October 24 at the Metropolitan Ballroom.  An internationally recognized social activist, Butts is Pastor of the famous Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City and President of SUNY College at Old Westbury.  He is known for his work promoting social justice, community building and empowerment.

Belarusian Delegates Visit Phyllis Wheatley
