Registrations Being Accepted for Wheatley's Summer Academic Achievement Program

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center is registering students for its summer session of Academic Achievement Program (formerly Academic Support Program) The summer session will operate for six weeks, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., beginning Monday, June 23 and ending Friday, August 1.
The program helps those in grades K-9 improve their academic skills in the areas of math, writing, spelling, reading, science, creative arts and computer instruction. Academic Achievement Program also works to increase students’ self-esteem by giving them positive attention, recognition, and opportunities for success. Currently in its 17th year, the program provides small group and individual instruction.

Phyllis Wheatley will begin the 16th year of its Academic Support Program on Monday, September 16. Registrations are currently being accepted for this program that provides academic enrichment in the areas of math, writing, spelling, reading, science, computers and arts and crafts to children in grades K-6. Donnie Belcher and Gregory Clark, two participants of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center's Let's Motivate Leadership Council, were among five Twin Cities students honored with Children's Defense Fund-Minnesota "Beat the Odds" awards. Both are seniors attending North High. They were chosen for this award based on their ability to succeed despite obstacles and challenges encountered in their life. As part of this recognition, the students will receive scholarships to pursue higher education.

Calvin O. Butts, III. Butts is an internationally known social activist, Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City and President of SUNY College at Old Westbury.
